It doesn’t matter how motivated you may be in the beginning as long as you will not get any guidance and this may be the first step towards a drop of confidence in your own capabilities. As long as you don’t know how to choose the type of training that you should follow, considering the fact that there are different types for off-season and in-season, you will not be able to achieve your goals. Furthermore, even after gaining the information that you need, you still have a long way to go and the most important thing to work on is self-confidence and mental toughness. Here are 10 most useful tips to help you build that confidence that you sorely need:
1. Build a schedule
Prior to any commitment, you should write down your training schedule, because as soon as you’ve done that, you will have a program to follow. I will help you keeping track of your progress.
2. Motivational music
Pump up the music that you will potentially be using during the training session, but also the one to wake you up in the morning. It is very refreshing to get a powerful and motivational message and sound in your music, as soon as you wake up.
3. Visualize your goal
I mean that literally. This means that you should write down on a piece of paper what is it you are aiming for and stick that wherever you may bump into it. A message like “Keep running no matter what” should boost your morale for the entire training session.
4. Buzz words equals motivation
This is a sport related psychology and, believe it or not, it is used by professional athletes on a regular basis. Words like “Work hard”, “Never give up”, “Game on” and so on, can help you just as efficiently as a motivational speech would. Also, try and remember your finest athletic performance and remember how you felt during those moments. Your adrenaline levels will sky-rocket.
5. Apply pressure
There may be some days when you will lack the mood for running or any kind of workout really, and my advice is: ignore it! This will help you building a tougher mental condition, realizing that you can overcome any obstacles and you can push yourself beyond limits. Of course, you need to exclude serious cases such as illnesses and such.
6. Get a partner
A partner may motivate you in times of need, whenever you may not feel in mood or just feeling out of shape.
7. Understand the notion of sacrifice
As long as you are motivated in reaching your goal, you should spare no expenses when it comes to work your way to success.
8. Understand what sport means
You need to get acquainted with notions such as speed, strength, power, agility, as these are components required in virtually every sport and as long as you will focus on enhancing these assets, you will maintain a healthier state of mind as you will start improving your performance as the time passes.
9. Add variations
Doing the same exercise or the same program over and over again may turn your training dull and unappealing. Furthermore, your body will start adapting to the effort and will stop responding the same way that it did up to that moment. What you can do is add diversity, new exercises maybe, more weight or increase intensity.
10. Never give up
You must know that the sports competition is not for everyone and it is the effort that puts an end to any amateur’s starting career. This is why this is the first obstacle that you need to overcome and it is one that will follow you throughout your entire life as an athlete: how well can you manage effort and what sacrifices can you do to withstand the pressure and achieve your goals. Never let go of your dream if you want to be great.
